My chosen city.

Sophronia, The city divided into two sections each with it's own style, One half is entirely fun fair rides and roller coasters while the other is entirely businesses, lined with banks, factories, schools and more of the same.

I have chosen this city for a few reasons, one is that i have always had an interesting relationship with theme parks and fairs, being both terrified and yet enthralled by them, the mechanics and the intense feelings they bring out in people. The second is that the two sides of any city is juxtaposed rather than intertwined with one another, this brings fourth potentially amazing visuals.

"there is the great roller coaster with it's steep humps, the carousel with it's chain spokes, the ferris wheel of spinning cages, the death-ride with crouch motorcyclists"
Perhaps to get an idea on how this would look some research into each ride and the conditions needed for the rides to work correctly, so for the roller coaster, depending on the height it would not be able to run during a windy/rainy day because of health and safety... unless for this city i remove all health and safety and go full on crazy with how different the two sides of the cities are.

"The other half-city is of stone and marble and cement, with the bank, the factories, the palaces, the slaughterhouse, the school and all the rest."
This really conveys a jungle of tall buildings and same coloured structures, you could get lost in this dull gray landscape of blocky buildings.

Some quick thumbnails based on the ideas, more detailed ones to come.

  1. The interesting thing might be how for a time every year, the citizens practically level their city to turn it into a giant-sized carnival.

You could check out street fairs, which come close to this. Maybe the rollercoaster is suspended between city blocks?

    1. Hey there Stamp, yeah i wondered about the idea of taking caution to the wind and perhaps removing the whole concept of health and safety, having rides on rides and concrete buildings covered in hinges for easy dismantle.

I like the idea of getting first hand experience though! I'll probably check out dreamland and grab some close up images of important components, thanks!

    2. First hand research is always good. Looking at the text you could go a little macabre as the text uses terms like "carousel with chain spokes" "ferris wheel with steel cages" "the death-ride with crouching motorcyclists"

The carnival-city doesn't have to be happy. experiment with connotation!

    3. That... sounds very interesting... considering my backstory with theme parks i could use the feelings i had to make a really terrifying looking ride or part of the park, no seat belts for this park! hahaha
